Regular Season Round 2: Breakers - Kings 87-85

Important game to mention about took place in Auckland. New Zealand Breakers (1-1) saved a 2-point victory at home edging Kings (1-2) 87-85 in the fight for the fifth place. It looked good early as Kings took a 3-point small lead at the end of first quarter. But then New Zealand Breakers had a 28-12 second period charge getting the lead and Kings were not able to take back game control losing it eventually 85-87. New Zealand swingman Kirk Penney (196-80, college: Wisconsin, agency: Duran International) scored 25 points to lead the charge for the winners and American guard DJ Newbill (193-92, college: Penn St.) chipped in 22 points and 7 rebounds during the contest. New Zealand Breakers' coach Paul Henare allowed to play the deep bench players in such tough game. The former international swingman Todd Blanchfield (200-91) responded with 13 points, 8 rebounds and 4 assists and American forward Perry Ellis (203-93, college: Kansas) scored 19 points. Five Kings players scored in double figures. New Zealand Breakers will play against United in Melbourne in the next round and it may be quite challenging game. Kings will play on the road against Adelaide 36ers (#4) in Findon and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
