Regular Season Round 9: Nagoya DD - San-en 89-81

There was a small surprise in Nagoya where fifth ranked Diamond Dolphins (3-5) beat second-best San-en NeoPhoenix (4-4) 89-81 on Saturday. The hosts started the game with a very strong first quarter 26-6. But San-en NeoPhoenix won third quarter 30-16. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Diamond Dolphins dominated on the defensive end, holding San-en NeoPhoenix to just 6 points in first quarter. American forward Justin Burrell (207-88, college: St.John's) stepped up and scored 20 points and 6 rebounds (on 8-of-10 shooting from the field) for the winners and his fellow American import forward Jerome Tillman (201-87, college: Ohio, agency: Inception Sports) chipped in 16 points and 6 rebounds. The best for the losing side was Canadian center Scott Morrison (213-86, college: Portland St.) with 15 points and 8 rebounds and guard Shuto Tawatari (185-90) scored 20 points. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. Diamond Dolphins moved-up to fourth place, which they share with Hitachi SR and Niigata Albirex. Loser San-en NeoPhoenix keeps the second position with four games lost. Diamond Dolphins will face higher ranked Toyama Grouses (#3) at home in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. San-en NeoPhoenix will play against the league's leader Aishin Sea Horses and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
