Regular Season Round 9: Niigata Albirex - Hokkaido L. 81-84

We cannot really consider it an upset in the game between close teams when 3rd placed Niigata Albirex (3-5) was edged at home by fourth ranked Hokkaido L. (6-2) 84-81 on Saturday. The guests trailed by 15 points after three quarters before their 31-13 charge, which allowed them to win the game. Hokkaido L. made 23-of-27 free shots (85.2 percent) during the game. They also forced 19 Niigata Albirex turnovers. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 24 assists. American forward Greg Whittington (203-93, college: Rutgers) stepped up and scored 23 points and 6 rebounds for the winners and Canadian-Italian power forward Marc Trasolini (206-90, college: Santa Clara) chipped in 17 points and 9 rebounds. Four Hokkaido L. players scored in double figures. Hokkaido L.'s coach Kota Mizuno used entire bench in such tough game. The best for the losing side was American Davante Gardner (203-91, college: Marquette) with a double-double by scoring 31 points, 15 rebounds and 4 assists and the former international guard Kei Igarashi (180-80) scored 11 points and 6 assists. Hokkaido L. moved-up to second place, which they share with Toshiba BT and Chiba Jets. Niigata Albirex lost fourth consecutive game. They dropped to the fourth position with five games lost. Hokkaido L. will face Chiba Jets (#3) on the road in the next round, which may be the game of the day. Niigata Albirex will play against Toshiba Thunders in Kanagawa and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
