Regular Season Round 7: Gernika - Ferrol 89-82

An interesting game took place in Gernika where 4th placed Universitario de Ferrol (5-2) was upset on the court of tenth ranked Gernika (4-3) 89-82 on Saturday. It ended at the same time the two-game winning streak of Universitario de Ferrol. The hosts trailed by 10 points after first quarter, but they rallied back and won the game by 7 points. Gernika dominated down low during the game scoring 56 of its points in the paint compared to Universitario de Ferrol's 22. They outrebounded Universitario de Ferrol 38-23 including 25 on the defensive glass. It was a great evening for the former international power forward Maria Pina (187-87) who led her team to a victory with a double-double by scoring 30 points, 11 rebounds and 5 assists. Russian forward Marina Bas (194-85) helped adding 28 points and 13 rebounds. At the losing side international power forward Beatriz Sanchez (190-89, agency: ProDep Management) responded with a double-double by scoring 12 points and 10 rebounds and Canadian point guard Jamie Weisner (178-94, college: Oregon St., agency: LBM Management) scored 21 points. Four Gernika and five Universitario de Ferrol players scored in double figures. Gernika moved-up to sixth place, which they share with Al-Qazeres and Sant Adria. Loser Universitario de Ferrol dropped to the third position with two games lost. Gernika will face Araski (#10) in Vitoria-Gasteiz in the next round. Universitario de Ferrol will play at home against the league's second-placed Gipuzkoa UPV (#2) and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
