Regular Season Round 12: Toyama Grouses - Niigata Albirex 86-95

Very significant was Niigata Albirex's (#2) 95-86 road victory against one of their biggest challengers Toyama Grouses. Niigata Albirex dominated down low during the game scoring 68 of its points in the paint compared to Toyama Grouses' 44. They outrebounded Toyama Grouses 33-22 including 27 on the defensive glass. The winners were led by American Davante Gardner (203-91, college: Marquette) who had that evening a double-double by scoring 24 points and 10 rebounds (on 11-of-14 shooting from the field) and the former international guard Kei Igarashi (180-80) supported him with 11 points and 10 assists. Even 17 points and 9 assists by forward Naoki Uto (188-91) did not help to save the game for Toyama Grouses. Forward Hiroshi Otsuka (188-87) added 23 points. Five Niigata Albirex and four Toyama Grouses players scored in double figures. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Niigata Albirex maintains second position with 6-7 record having six points less than leader Ryukyu GK, which they share with San-en and Shiga L-Stars. Toyama Grouses lost fourth consecutive game. They keep the fourth place with eight games lost. Niigata Albirex will play against league's leader Aishin Sea Horses in Kariya in the next round and it will be for sure the game of the week. Toyama Grouses will play on the road against Yokohama BC and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
