Regular Season Round 7: Taipans - Hawks 87-66

Date: November 18, 2017
The game in Cairns supposed to be also quite interesting. 4th placed Illawarra Hawks (5-6) played at the court of sixth ranked Cairns Taipans (5-6). Cairns Taipans smashed Illawarra Hawks 87-66 on Saturday. It ended at the same time the four-game winning streak of Illawarra Hawks. Cairns Taipans shot the lights out from three sinking 15 long-distance shots on high 57.7 percentage. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 22 assists. It was a great evening for American guard Scoochie Smith (188-94, college: Dayton) who led his team to a victory scoring 19 points, 5 rebounds and 6 assists. The former international power forward Alexander Loughton (206-83, college: ODU) helped adding 17 points and 5 assists. Four Cairns Taipans players scored in double figures. At the losing side American forward Demitrius Conger (196-90, college: St.Bonaventure) responded with 17 points and international power forward Nick Kay (206-92, college: Metro St.) produced a double-double by scoring 11 points and 11 rebounds. Since the result was very predictable, it gave the chance for the coaches to test many bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Cairns Taipans moved-up to fifth place, which they share with Hawks. Cairns Taipans will meet at home bottom-ranked Kings (#8) in the next round. Illawarra Hawks will play against United in Melbourne and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
