Regular Season Round 9: Taipans - United 79-70

There was a small surprise when fifth ranked Cairns Taipans (7-7) defeated at home 5th ranked United (7-6) 79-70 on Saturday. International guard Mitchell McCarron (191-92, college: Metro St.) stepped up and scored 13 points and 9 rebounds for the winners and the former international power forward Alexander Loughton (206-83, college: ODU) chipped in 11 points and 5 rebounds. Five Cairns Taipans players scored in double figures. The best for the losing side was American-Fijian forward Tai Wesley (201-86, college: Utah St.) with 20 points and 7 rebounds and American swingman Casey Prather (198-91, college: Florida) scored 14 points and 6 rebounds. United's coach Dean Vickerman let to play eleven players, but that didn't help to avoid defeat in this game. Cairns Taipans maintains fifth place with 7-7 record. Loser United dropped to the third position with six games lost. Cairns Taipans will face bottom-ranked Kings (#8) in Sydney in the next round. United will play on the road against Illawarra Hawks (#6) in Gwynneville and hope to win that game.
