Regular Season Round 8: Aris - Panathinaikos 70-88

A1 top team - Panathinaikos (8-0) had no problems winning another game on Saturday. This time they beat ninth ranked Aris (3-5) in Thessaloniki 88-70. The game was mostly controlled by Panathinaikos. Aris managed to win third quarter 17-16. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Panathinaikos shot the lights out from three sinking 13 long-distance shots on high 54.2 percentage. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 23 assists. The best player for the winners was international point guard Nick Calathes (198-89, college: Florida) who scored 18 points and 8 assists. American James Gist (206-86) chipped in 8 points and 6 rebounds. American center Keith Benson (211-88, college: Oakland) produced 18 points and 9 rebounds and the former international point guard Ioannis Athineou (194-88, agency: Octagon Europe) added 12 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists respectively for the hosts. Four Aris players scored in double figures. Both coaches tested many bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Panathinaikos have an impressive eight-game winning streak. Defending champion maintains first position with 8-0 record. Loser Aris dropped to the eighth place with five games lost. They share the position with 3 other teams. Panathinaikos will meet at home Cretan Kings (#8) in the next round and are hoping to win another game. Aris will play against Kymis and hope to secure a win.
