CB Canarias (6-5) outlasted FC Barcelona (8-3) in overtime by two points 93-91 on Sunday night. The game took place in Barcelona. But the guests from Tenerife were better at the end. It ended at the same time the four-game winning streak of FC Barcelona. FC Barcelona was trailing by 2 points at halftime but managed to get 2-point lead after three quarters before a 19-17 charge of CB Canarias, which allowed them to tie the game at the end of regular time. They were better in overtime eventually winning that period 16-14. CB Canarias made 20-of-24 free shots (83.3 percent) during the game. It was a great evening for Polish swingman Mateusz Ponitka (196-93) who led his team to a victory with a double-double by scoring 28 points and 10 rebounds (was perfect 7-for-7 from the free throw line). American Tim Abromaitis (203-89, college: Notre Dame) helped adding 17 points (on 7-of-9 shooting from the field). The former international Juan-Carlos Navarro (192-80) responded with 22 points and American forward Rakim Sanders (196-89, college: Fairfield) scored 14 points and 5 rebounds. Both coaches tested many bench players in such tough game. CB Canarias moved-up to eighth place, which they share with Unicaja. Loser FC Barcelona keeps the second position with three games lost. CB Canarias will face Unicaja Malaga (#9) at home in the next round. FC Barcelona will play against Gran Canaria (#6) and hope to win that game.
