Regular Season Round 8: Proteas - Panathinaikos 73-46
Date: December 10, 2017
Bottom-ranked Panathinaikos (0-8) is still winless. This time they lost on the road their eighth consecutive match to ninth ranked Proteas (3-5) 73-46. The game was mostly controlled by Proteas. Panathinaikos was better in fourth quarter 18-13. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. They dominated on the defensive end, holding Panathinaikos to just 7 points in second quarter. Proteas dominated down low during the game scoring 62 of its points in the paint compared to Panathinaikos' 22. Proteas forced 26 Panathinaikos turnovers and outrebounded them 45-32 including 16 on the offensive glass. The winners were led by the former international forward Anthoula Chatzigiakoumi (185-92, college: FGCU) who scored that evening 17 points and 8 rebounds (on 7-of-8 shooting from the field) and forward Mandy Anastasopoulou (186-99) supported her with 8 points and 11 rebounds. Even 13 points and 5 rebounds by swingman Katerina Tsineke (178-99) did not help to save the game for Panathinaikos. Power forward Chinasa-Cynthia Ezedja (188-0) added 10 points and 10 rebounds for the guests. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. Proteas moved-up to eighth place, which they share with Niki Lefkadas. Panathinaikos at the other side still closes the standings with eight games lost. Proteas will play against Niki Lefkadas (#8) on the road in the next round. Panathinaikos will play against Panathlitikos (#10) and hopes to get finally their first victory.
