Regular Season Round 16: Niigata R. - Hitachi Cougars 73-82

Bottom-ranked Niigata R. (0-16) tried to put together a comeback for its first victory of the season, but they fell short in the 82-73 loss to eighth ranked Hitachi Cougars (6-10) in Tokyo. The guests were already 15 points ahead after 3 quarters before a 20-14 Niigata R.'s run in the last quarter cut the lead to 82-73 at the end of the game. They outrebounded Niigata R. 34-22 including a 25-14 advantage in defensive rebounds. It was a great shooting night for Hitachi Cougars especially from behind the arc, where they had solid 58.8 percentage. Their players were unselfish on offense dishing 22 assists. They brought some defensive toughness making 8 blocks. Worth to mention a great performance of Saki Matsumoto (176-94) who helped to win the game recording 13 points and 6 assists. Swingman Ishiguro Mutsumi (175-92) contributed with 12 points and 5 rebounds for the winners. Power forward Manaka Watanabe (177-95) replied with 19 points and Hatanaka Miho (177-85) added 10 points and 5 assists in the effort for Niigata R.Four Niigata R. players scored in double figures. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Hitachi Cougars maintains eighth position with 6-10 record. Niigata R. at the other side still closes the standings. Hitachi Cougars will play against Haneda Vickies (#9) in Tokyo in the next round. Niigata R. will play on the road against Aishin Wings in Anjo and hopes to get finally their first victory.
