Regular Season Round 9: Olympiacos Volou - Panionios 65-74

There was no surprise when 11th ranked Olympiacos Volou (1-8) was defeated at home by third ranked Panionios (8-1) 74-65 on Sunday. The guests started the game with a very strong first quarter 18-6. But Olympiacos Volou won second period 20-15. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Panionios dominated on the defensive end, holding Olympiacos Volou to just 6 points in first quarter. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 22 assists. The best player for the winners was the former international guard Aikaterini Spatharou (172-83) who scored 22 points, 8 rebounds and 8 assists. American forward Katie Healy (185-94, college: St.Bonaventure) chipped in a double-double by scoring 16 points, 12 rebounds and 5 assists. Four Panionios players scored in double figures. At the other side the best for losing team was FYR Macedonian guard Ana Tanturovska (174-90) who recorded 17 points and American guard Ciara Andrews (175-94, college: St.Joseph's) added 15 points and 5 assists respectively. Panionios moved-up to second place, which they share with Faros Keratsiniou. Olympiacos Volou lost their seventh game in a row. Newly promoted team keeps the eleventh position with eight games lost. Panionios will face PAOK (#8) in Thessaloniki in the next round which should be theoretically an easy game. Olympiacos Volou will play on the road against Athinaikos in Athens and hope to win that game.
