The game in Gwynneville was also quite interesting. 5th ranked Cairns Taipans (8-11) played at the court of sixth ranked Illawarra Hawks (8-9). Illawarra Hawks managed to secure a 4-point victory 106-102 on Thursday. Illawarra Hawks made 19-of-23 free shots (82.6 percent) during the game. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 21 assists. Worth to mention a great performance of American forward Demitrius Conger (196-90, college: St.Bonaventure) who helped to win the game recording 24 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists and the other American import point guard Rotnei Clarke (183-89, college: Butler) who added 16 points and 9 rebounds during the contest. Illawarra Hawks' coach Rob Beveridge used a ten-player rotation in such tough game. The best for the losing side was international swingman Cameron Gliddon (197-89, college: Concordia Irvine) with 20 points, 8 rebounds, 5 assists and 4 steals and American guard Scoochie Smith (188-94, college: Dayton) scored 21 points and 5 rebounds. Five Illawarra Hawks and four Cairns Taipans players scored in double figures. Illawarra Hawks have a solid three-game winning streak. They moved-up to fifth place. Loser Cairns Taipans dropped to the sixth position with 11 games lost. Illawarra Hawks will face higher ranked United (#3) in Melbourne in the next round and it may be quite challenging game.
