Not a big story in a game when 20th ranked Blue Whales (3-21) were outscored by thirteenth ranked Sharks (12-12) in Shanghai 119-92 on Thursday. Sharks made 16-of-19 free shots (84.2 percent) during the game. Strangely Blue Whales outrebounded Sharks 56-44 including 22 on the offensive glass. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 27 assists. Great defensive blocking was one of the keys in this match when Sharks made 9 blocks. It was a good game for American point guard Jimmer Fredette (188-89, college: BYU) who led his team to a victory with 31 points, 7 rebounds and 9 assists. The other American import Nick Minnerath (207-88, college: Detroit Mercy) contributed with 21 points for the winners. Four Sharks players scored in double figures. Iranian center Hamed Haddadi (218-85) replied with a double-double by scoring 26 points, 21 rebounds and 5 assists and Nigerian-American power forward Ikechukwu Diogu (204-83, college: Arizona St.) added 27 points and 17 rebounds in the effort for Blue Whales. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. Sharks moved-up to twelfth place, which they share with Jiangsu TX MK. Blue Whales lost third consecutive game. They stay dead last with 21 lost games. Sharks will face higher ranked Fly Dragons (#10) in Beijing in the next round and it may be quite challenging game. Blue Whales will play at home against Xinjiang Flying Tige (#6) and hope to win that game.
