Regular Season Round 18: Gijon - Betanzos 83-82

Sixth-ranked Betanzos (8-7) was very close to win a game against second ranked Gijon (12-3) on Saturday. Gijon managed to secure only one-point victory 83-82. However their fans expected much easier game. The hosts took control from the first minutes by winning first half. But Betanzos won third quarter 18-17. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. It was a good game for American forward Malik Wineglass (203, college: Harris-Stowe St.) who saved his team from a defeat with a double-double by scoring 24 points and 15 rebounds. The other American import swingman James Pegues (198-93, college: Newman) contributed with a double-double by scoring 19 points and 10 rebounds for the winners. Center Marcos Rozas (202-83) replied with 21 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists and Senegalese power forward Abdou Thiam (204-98) added 14 points and 16 rebounds in the effort for Betanzos. Five Betanzos players scored in double figures. Gijon have an impressive 12-game winning streak. They maintain second position in Group A-B with 12-3 record having just three point less than leader Algeciras. Betanzos at the other side dropped to the eighth place with seven games lost. They share the position with 5 other teams. Gijon are looking forward to face league's leader Marin at home in the next round and it will be for sure the game of the week. Betanzos will play against Innova Chef (#10) in Zamora and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
