Regular Season Round 17: Zaragoza - Burgos 73-79

Everything could happen at the game between two tied teams. Both fifteenth ranked Burgos and 16th ranked Zaragoza had identical 5-11 record. But Zaragoza was not able to use a home court advantage and lost to the opponent from Burgos 79-73 on Sunday night. The guests started the game with a very strong first quarter 28-12. But Zaragoza won second period 28-18. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. The game was decided in the last minutes when Burgos won last quarter 20-16. They dominated down low during the game scoring 58 of its points in the paint compared to Zaragoza's 34. They outrebounded Zaragoza 36-24 including a 31-20 advantage in defensive rebounds. International forward Sebastian Saiz (206-94, college: Mississippi) stepped up and scored 19 points (perfect from the field making all nine shots !!!) for the winners and American guard John Jenkins (193-91, college: Vanderbilt, agency: BeoBasket) chipped in 18 points. American guard Gary Neal (193-84, college: Towson) responded with 18 points and the other American import center Jarvis Varnado (206-88, college: Mississippi St.) scored 14 points and 7 rebounds (was perfect 9-for-9 from the free throw line !!!). Both coaches allowed to play bench players saving starting five for next games. The victory was the third consecutive win for Burgos. They moved-up to fourteenth place, which they share with RETAbet BB. Loser Zaragoza keeps the sixteenth position with 12 games lost. Burgos will face higher ranked Unicaja Malaga (#6) at home in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Zaragoza will play against Gran Canaria (#9) in Las Palmas and hope to win that game.
