Regular Season Round 16: Magec Tias - Gran Canaria 48-49

Eighth-ranked Magec Tias (7-9) used its home court advantage to challenge top-ranked Gran Canaria (16-0) in Las Palmas on Saturday. The visitors managed to secure only one-point victory 49-48. However their fans expected much easier game. The guests took control from the first minutes by winning first half. But Magec Tias won third quarter 16-12. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Gran Canaria had a 33-21 advantage in offensive rebounds. Worth to mention a great performance of American guard Erica Covile (185, college: Temple) who helped to win the game recording a double-double by scoring 10 points and 10 rebounds. Russian swingman Natalia Merkulova (175-91, college: SUNO) contributed with 12 points and 7 rebounds for the winners. Argentinian power forward Ornella Santana (183-90) replied with a double-double by scoring 15 points and 14 rebounds and American guard Keira Robinson (173, college: VCU) added 11 points and 4 steals in the effort for Magec Tias. Gran Canaria have an impressive 16-game winning streak. They maintain first position in Group B with 16-0 record. Newly promoted Magec Tias keeps the eighth place with nine games lost. Gran Canaria are looking forward to face Almeria (#11) at home in the next round and are hoping to win another game. Magec Tias will play against the league's second-placed Valencia and is hoping to prove to their fans that this time they can win.
