Regular Season Round 17: Rioja - Oviedo 70-65

Bottom-ranked Oviedo (0-17) is still winless. This time they lost on the road their 17th consecutive match to eighth ranked Rioja (9-8) 70-65. It looked good early as Oviedo took a 9-point lead at the end of first quarter. But then Rioja took control winning two of next three quarters and eventually winning the game that evening by 5 points. DR Congolese-Belgian center Harriet Bende (186-94) orchestrated the victory with a double-double by scoring 17 points and 11 rebounds. Araia Pena contributed with 13 points for the winners. Four Rioja players scored in double figures. Rioja's coach Xabier Chico allowed to play the deep bench players in such tough game. American point guard Malaika Green (163-91, college: Texas Arlington) answered with 16 points and 5 rebounds and Tania Soto added 14 points (on 6-of-7 shooting from the field) in the effort for Oviedo. The victory was the fourth consecutive win for Rioja. They moved-up to seventh place in Group A, which they share with Arxil Pontev. Oviedo lost their seventeenth game in a row. They still close the standings with 17 games lost. Rioja's next round opponent will be league's leader Real Celta Vigo on the road and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Oviedo will play against Lima-Horta (#10) and hopes to get finally their first victory.
