Regular Season Round 17: Breakers - Hawks 88-84

The game between closely ranked teams ended with fourth ranked New Zealand Breakers' (15-9) home victory over 5th ranked Illawarra Hawks (10-14) in Auckland 88-84 on Sunday. New Zealand Breakers made 18-of-19 free shots (94.7 percent) during the game. New Zealand Breakers had a 26-14 advantage in offensive rebounds. New Zealand guard Shea Ili (184-92) orchestrated the victory by scoring 17 points and 5 assists (was perfect 9-for-9 from the free throw line !!!). American guard DJ Newbill (193-92, college: Penn St.) contributed with 20 points for the winners. Four New Zealand Breakers players scored in double figures. American point guard Rotnei Clarke (183-89, college: Butler) answered with 22 points and international power forward Nick Kay (206-92, college: Metro St.) added 9 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists in the effort for Illawarra Hawks. Both coaches allowed to play bench players in such tough game. New Zealand Breakers moved-up to third place. Loser Illawarra Hawks keep the fifth position with 14 games lost. New Zealand Breakers will face league's leader United in Melbourne in the next round and it will be for sure the game of the week. Illawarra Hawks will play at home against the league's second-placed Adelaide 36ers (#2) and hope to win that game.
