Regular Season Round 17: Stjarnan - Valur 93-87
Date: February 8, 2018
There was no surprise when 10th ranked Valur (5-12) was defeated on the road by seventh ranked Stjarnan (9-8) 93-87 on Thursday. The hosts trailed by 2 points after first quarter, but they rallied back to get the 3-point lead at the halftime and eventually won the game 93-87. Great defensive blocking was one of the keys in this match when Stjarnan made 7 blocks. The former international power forward Hlynur Baeringsson (200-82) stepped up with a double-double by scoring 14 points, 11 rebounds and 5 assists for the winners and American guard Darell Combs (188-93, college: IUPUI) chipped in 26 points. Four Stjarnan players scored in double figures. American forward Urald King (198-90, college: SE Oklahoma) responded with a double-double by scoring 24 points and 11 rebounds and naturalized American guard Austin Bracey (190-90) scored 26 points. Valur's coach Agust Bjorgvinsson tested ten players, but that didn't help to avoid defeat in this game. Stjarnan moved-up to sixth place, which they share with Grindavik. Valur lost third consecutive game. Newly promoted team keeps the tenth position with 12 games lost. Stjarnan will meet Thor AK (#11) in the next round which should be theoretically an easy game. Valur's supporters look forward to an exciting derby game next round, where their team will face at home their local rival from Reykjavik IR.
