Regular Season Round 18: Valur - IR 77-83
Date: February 12, 2018
Another interesting game was a derby match between two teams from Reykjavik: IR (#3) and Valur (#10). Despite it looked like an easy game for IR, those rules do not exist in derby games. It's more the case of honor for local supporters and such games have that special and unique approach you cannot find in other games. Host Valur challenged much higher ranked IR giving them a very tough game, but finally losing it by six points 83-77. IR forced 21 Valur turnovers. The best player for the winners was American forward Ryan Taylor (196-92, college: Marshall) who scored 15 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists. The other American import forward Danero Thomas (200-86, college: Murray St.) chipped in 15 points and 8 rebounds. Four IR players scored in double figures. At the other side the best for losing team was American forward Urald King (198-90, college: SE Oklahoma) who recorded a double-double by scoring 25 points, 19 rebounds and 5 blocks and Gunnar Hardarson (185-96, college: Belm.Abbey) added 13 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists respectively. Valur's coach Agust Bjorgvinsson tested ten players, but that didn't help to avoid defeat in this game. IR maintains third position with 13-5 record having just one point less than leader Haukar, which they share with Tindastoll. Valur lost fourth consecutive game. Newly promoted team keeps the tenth place with 13 games lost. IR's next round opponent will be Thor AK (#11) in Akureyri and are hoping to win another game. Valur will play at home against Thor Thorl and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
