Regular Season Round 19: Stjarnan - Grindavik 81-100
Date: February 15, 2018
We cannot really consider it an upset in the game between close teams when 6th ranked Stjarnan (10-9) was crushed at home by seventh ranked Grindavik (10-9) 100-81. The game was mostly controlled by Grindavik. Stjarnan was better in second period 27-26. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Grindavik players were unselfish on offense dishing 22 assists. It was an exceptional evening for the former international guard Olafur Olafsson (194-90) who led the winners and scored 31 points and 8 rebounds. Guard Dagur Jonsson (185-95, college: St.Francis, NY) accounted for 20 points, 7 rebounds and 7 assists for the winning side. Grindavik's coach Johann Olafsson allowed to play the deep bench players saving starting five for next games. International forward Tomas Hilmarsson (201-95, college: Francis Marion) came up with a double-double by scoring 21 points and 12 rebounds and the former international power forward Hlynur Baeringsson (200-82) added 15 points, 12 rebounds and 5 assists respectively for Stjarnan in the defeat. Five Grindavik and four Stjarnan players scored in double figures. Grindavik moved-up to sixth place, which they share with defeated Stjarnan. Grindavik will play against league's second-placed IR in Reykjavik in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Stjarnan will play on the road against the league's leader Haukar (#1) in Hafnarfjordur and hopes to get back on the winning track.
