Regular Season Round 19: Valencia - Gran Canaria 82-74

The most crucial game of the last round was the first loss of undefeated Gran Canaria (18-1) on the court of second ranked Valencia on Sunday night. Visitors were defeated by Valencia 82-74. It ended at the same time the 18-game winning streak of Gran Canaria. It may be a crucial game in the contest for the top position in Group B. Gran Canaria trailed by 12 points after 3 quarters before a 23-19 run in the last quarter cut the deficit to 74-82 at the end of the game. Valencia looked well-organized offensively handing out 25 assists. Worth to mention a great performance of Brazilian forward Isabela Ramona-Lyra (180-94) who helped to win the game recording 20 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists. Montenegrin guard Snezana Aleksic (173-89, agency: ProDep Management) contributed with 16 points and 6 assists for the winners. Valencia's coach Ruben Burgos used a ten-player rotation which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. American guard Erica Covile (185, college: Temple) answered with a double-double by scoring 18 points, 12 rebounds, 5 assists and 7 steals and the other American import point guard Starr Breedlove (168-93, college: UTEP) added 22 points and 4 assists in the effort for Gran Canaria. Four Gran Canaria players scored in double figures. Valencia (15-3) have an impressive series of eleven victories in a row. They maintain second place in Group B having four points less than leader Gran Canaria. Gran Canaria at the other side still keeps top position with one game lost. Valencia are looking forward to face Real Canoe (#7) in Madrid in the next round which should be theoretically an easy game. Gran Canaria will play at home against Leganes (#4) and is hoping to win this game.
