Regular Season Round 24: Gijon - Chantada 87-81

Everything could happen at the game between two tied teams. Both second ranked Gijon and one of their biggest challengers Chantada had identical 15-6 record. This time Gijon used a home court advantage and defeated the opponent from Chantada 87-81 on Saturday night. The hosts trailed by 16 points after first quarter, but they rallied back and won the game by 6 points. Gijon made 18-of-22 free shots (81.8 percent) during the game. They also forced 21 Chantada turnovers. It was a good game for American swingman James Pegues (198-93, college: Newman) who led his team to a victory with a double-double by scoring 25 points and 12 rebounds. The other American import point guard Kenny Hatch (180, college: Texas A&M Int.) contributed with 26 points and 4 assists for the winners. Four Gijon players scored in double figures. Point guard Ruben Pernas (185-81) replied with 33 points (!!!) and 4 assists and Nigerian forward Jeffrey Solarin (193-92, college: Idaho St.) added 18 points, 13 rebounds and 4 assists in the effort for Chantada. Gijon have a solid three-game winning streak. They maintain second position in Group A-B with 16-6 record having just five point less than leader Vic. Loser Chantada keeps the third place with seven games lost. Gijon will face Culleredo (#13) on the road in the next round which should be an easy win for them. Chantada will play against Betanzos (#6) and hope to win that game.
