There was no surprise when 7th ranked Cartagena (9-11) was defeated at home by third ranked Valencia-2 (13-6) 82-71 on Saturday. The guests were tied at the half but managed to speed up in last two quarters eventually winning the game. Valencia-2 made 19-of-22 free shots (86.4 percent) during the game. Luis Ferrando (185-96, college: Mount Olive) stepped up and scored 26 points and 4 assists (on 10-of-13 shooting from the field) for the winners and Jon Galarza (193-97) chipped in 17 points and 5 rebounds. Four Valencia-2 players scored in double figures. Valencia-2's coach Angel Cepeda used a ten-player rotation saving starting five for next games. At the losing side forward Javier Santabarbara (197-95) responded with 24 points and 7 rebounds and Argentinian point guard Gaston Zalazar scored 12 points and 4 assists. Valencia-2 maintains third place in Group E with 13-6 record having five points less than leader Vic. Loser Cartagena keeps the seventh position with 11 games lost. Valencia-2 will face L Alfas (#5) in Alfas Del Pi in the next round. Cartagena will play on the road against Sagunto in Gilet and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
