Regular Season Round 23: Gipuzkoa UPV - Gernika 65-74

There was a small surprise in San Sebastian where seventh ranked Gernika (12-11) defeated 5th ranked Gipuzkoa UPV (12-10) 74-65. The guests were already 11 points ahead at halftime and as many as 16 after three quarters before a 15-8 last quarter charge of Gipuzkoa UPV cut the lead to 74-65 at the end of the game. They outrebounded Gipuzkoa UPV 39-27 including 18 on the offensive glass. It was an exceptional evening for American center Talia Caldwell (188-91, college: California) who led the winners with a double-double by scoring 12 points and 13 rebounds. Her fellow American import guard Ameryst Alston (175-93, college: Ohio St.) accounted for 17 points for the winning side. Croatian swingman Jelena Ivezic (182-84) came up with 14 points and 7 rebounds and Senegalese power forward Oumoul Sarr (185-84) added 10 points, 6 rebounds and 6 assists respectively for Gipuzkoa UPV in the defeat. Four Gipuzkoa UPV players scored in double figures. Both coaches tested many bench players saving starting five for next games. Gernika moved-up to sixth place, which they share with AE Sedis. Gipuzkoa UPV at the other side keeps the fifth position with ten games lost. Gernika's next round opponent will be Campus Promete (#13) in Logrono and are hoping to win another game. Gipuzkoa UPV will play at home against the league's leader Perfumerias Avenida (#1) and hope to win that game.
