There was a small surprise in Cheltenham where seventh ranked Diamond Valley Eagles (1-1) edged bottom-ranked Sabres (0-1) 91-90 on Saturday. The guests trailed by 3 points after three quarters before their 21-17 charge, which allowed them to win the game. Diamond Valley Eagles dominated down low during the game scoring 72 of its points in the paint compared to Sabres' 40. They outrebounded Sabres 35-15 including a 22-10 advantage in defensive rebounds. American forward Mike Best (208-93, college: Cal-Irvine) stepped up and scored 16 points, 9 rebounds and 6 blocks for the winners and Joel Rimes chipped in 13 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists. Five Diamond Valley Eagles players scored in double figures. Nigerian-American guard Anthony Odunsi (193-92, college: Houston Baptist, agency: Haylett Sports) responded with 22 points and guard Alister Macdonald (186-92) scored 20 points and 4 assists. Diamond Valley Eagles left bottom position moving up to fourth place in League. Loser Sabres still closes the standings with one game lost. Diamond Valley Eagles will face higher ranked Spectres (#3) in East Burwood in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Sabres will play on the road against Dandenong Rangers (#5) and hope to get finally their first victory.
