Regular Season Round 7: Sydney Uni S. - Diamond VE 77-67

We cannot really consider it an upset in the game between close teams when 6th ranked Diamond Valley Eagles (2-4) were defeated on the road by seventh ranked Sydney Uni S. (2-2) 77-67 on Friday. The game was mostly controlled by Sydney Uni S.. Diamond Valley Eagles was better in second period 20-18. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. The game was decided in the last minutes when Sydney Uni S. won last quarter 22-14. They dominated down low during the game scoring 64 of its points in the paint compared to Diamond Valley Eagles' 40. They outrebounded Diamond Valley Eagles 39-27 including 16 on the offensive glass. Sydney Uni S. looked well-organized offensively handing out 25 assists comparing to just 9 passes made by Diamond Valley Eagles' players. Great defensive blocking was one of the keys in this match when Sydney Uni S. made 9 blocks. It was a great evening for guard Tahlia Tupaea (174-97) who led her team to a victory scoring 26 points, 9 rebounds and 6 assists. Center Lara McSpadden (193-99) helped adding 18 points, 8 rebounds, 5 assists and 5 blocks. Sydney Uni S.'s coach used a ten-player rotation which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. At the losing side international power forward Eziyoda Magbegor (176-99) responded with 10 points, 8 rebounds and 4 blocks and New Zealand swingman Chevannah Paalvast (180-91, college: Monmouth) scored 14 points. Sydney Uni S. moved-up to sixth place in League. Loser Diamond Valley Eagles dropped to the fourth position with four games lost. Sydney Uni S. will face higher ranked Geelong Supercats (#3) at home in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Diamond Valley Eagles will play against Tigers and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
