There was no surprise in Mt Gambier where bottom-ranked Canberra Gunners (0-9) were crushed by sixth ranked Mount Gambier Pioneers (4-5) 120-75 on Friday. The game without a history. Mount Gambier Pioneers led from the first minutes and controlled entire game increasing their lead in each quarter. They dominated down low during the game scoring 52 of its points in the paint compared to Canberra Gunners' 32 and made 26-of-33 free shots (78.8 percent) during the game. Mount Gambier Pioneers looked well-organized offensively handing out 32 assists. Great defensive blocking was one of the keys in this match when Mount Gambier Pioneers made 9 blocks. Canberra Gunners were plagued by 25 personal fouls down the stretch. The best player for the winners was swingman Sam McDaniel (198-95, college: La-Monroe) who had a double-double by scoring 23 points, 10 rebounds and 4 assists. Naturalized British forward Lewis Thomas (203-92, college: W.Oregon) chipped in a double-double by scoring 24 points, 12 rebounds and 5 blocks. At the other side the best for losing team was center Ben Allen (211-86, college: St.Mary's, CA) who recorded 22 points and 5 assists and guard Daniel Joyce (194-87) added 17 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists respectively. Five Mount Gambier Pioneers and four Canberra Gunners players scored in double figures. Since the result was very predictable, it gave the chance for the coaches to test many bench players and allowed the starting five to rest. Mount Gambier Pioneers moved-up to fifth place in League. Loser Canberra Gunners still closes the standings with nine games lost. Mount Gambier Pioneers will face higher ranked Dandenong Rangers (#4) at home in the next round and it may be quite challenging game. Canberra Gunners will play against NW Tasmania Thunder (#6) and hope to get finally their first victory.
