There was a surprise result when sixth ranked Mount Gambier Pioneers (5-8) beat leader Ballarat Miners (9-5) in Wendouree 88-78 on Saturday. Naturalized British forward Lewis Thomas (203-92, college: W.Oregon) orchestrated the victory with a double-double by scoring 20 points and 12 rebounds. Forward Luke Jamieson (200-94) contributed with a double-double by scoring 17 points and 13 rebounds for the winners. Fijian forward Joshua Fox (198-94, college: Cal-Davis, agency: MKP Management) answered with a double-double by scoring 17 points and 14 rebounds and guard Peter Hooley (193-92, college: Albany) added 20 points in the effort for Ballarat Miners. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. Mount Gambier Pioneers maintains sixth place in League with 5-8 record. Loser Ballarat Miners dropped to the third position with five games lost. Mount Gambier Pioneers will face Frankston Blues (#8) in Seaford in the next round. Ballarat Miners will play at home against the league's second-placed Kilsyth Cobras (#2) and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
