Very important is a road loss of second ranked Pichincha (3-3) against sixth ranked Univ. Santa Cruz (1-5) on Friday night. Visiting Pichincha was defeated by Univ. Santa Cruz in a tough game on the road 74-78. It ended at the same time the three-game winning streak of Pichincha. Univ. Santa Cruz forced 24 Pichincha turnovers. Spanish-American forward Duane James (196-83, college: Binghamton) notched 28 points and 7 rebounds to lead the effort and American center Wendell Lewis (208-89, college: Alabama St., agency: HMS) supported him with 15 points and 6 rebounds. James is a former Eurobasket Summer League player, which is considered top international summer league in the market. Univ. Santa Cruz's coach Mario Veramendi allowed to play the deep bench players in such tough game. Even 27 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists and 5 steals (on 10-of-13 shooting from the field) by American forward Trevante Drye (199-93, college: Tulane) did not help to save the game for Pichincha. The former international swingman Rene Calvo (193-93) added 19 points and 10 rebounds. Four Pichincha players scored in double figures. Newly promoted Univ.
