Regular Season Round 7: Bendigo - Townsville 82-89

Very important is a home loss of third ranked Bendigo Spirit (6-4) against seventh ranked Townsville Fire (4-5) on Saturday night. Host Bendigo Spirit was defeated by Townsville Fire in a tough game in Bendigo 82-89. Townsville Fire made 19-of-24 free shots (79.2 percent) during the game. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 29 assists. It was a great evening for the former international center Suzy Batkovic (195-80) who led her team to a victory with a double-double by scoring 25 points, 16 rebounds and 4 blocks. The former international forward Tess Madgen (180-90) helped adding 15 points and 14 assists. Five Townsville Fire players scored in double figures. At the losing side American power forward Rebecca Tobin (195-88, college: Arizona St.) responded with a double-double by scoring 26 points, 19 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 blocks (made all of her nine free throws !!!) and power forward Nadeen Payne (188-93, agency: LBM Management) scored 17 points and 8 rebounds. Defending champion moved-up to fifth place, which they share with Dandenong. Loser Bendigo Spirit dropped to the fourth position with four games lost. Townsville Fire will meet league's leader Boomers in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Bendigo Spirit will play against Sydney Uni Flames and hope to secure a win.
