Regular Season Round 12: Valur - Keflavik 101-94

Very important is a road loss of third ranked Keflavik (8-3) against fifth ranked Valur (6-6) on Friday night. Visiting Keflavik was defeated by Valur in a tough game in Reykjavik 94-101. It ended at the same time the seven-game winning streak of Keflavik. Keflavik trailed by 28 points after 3 quarters before a 39-18 run in the last quarter cut the deficit to 94-101 at the end of the game. Valur dominated down low during the game scoring 58 of its points in the paint compared to Keflavik's 32 and made 16-of-19 free shots (84.2 percent) during the game. They outrebounded Keflavik 40-29 including 27 on the defensive glass. Valur looked well-organized offensively handing out 25 assists. Great defensive blocking was one of the keys in this match when Valur made 7 blocks. The winners were led by American point guard Heather Butler (165-90, college: Tenn-Martin) who scored that evening 21 points, 5 rebounds and 7 assists and the former international swingman Helena Sverrisdottir (184-88, college: TCU) supported her with 19 points, 7 rebounds and 7 assists. Five Valur players scored in double figures. Even 32 points, 7 rebounds, 9 assists and 4 steals (went 9 for 9 at the free throw line !!!) by American guard Brittanny Dinkins (170-94, college: S.Mississippi) did not help to save the game for Keflavik. International center Birna Benonysdottir (183-0) added 18 points. Keflavik's coach Jon Gudmundsson rotated twelve players in this game, but that didn't help. Valur have a solid three-game winning streak. They maintain fifth position with 6-6 record. Loser Keflavik keeps the third place with three games lost. Valur will meet higher ranked Stjarnan (#4) on the road in the next round and it may be quite challenging game. Keflavik will play against Breidablik and hope to secure a win.
