Very expected game when 8th ranked Gran Canaria (5-6) was smashed by second ranked Adelantados (9-2) in San Cristobal 91-70 on Saturday. Adelantados dominated down low during the game scoring 60 of its points in the paint compared to Gran Canaria's 36. They outrebounded Gran Canaria 43-14 including a 16-3 advantage in offensive rebounds. American guard Tanaya Atkinson (183-96, college: Temple) orchestrated the victory by scoring 26 points and 7 rebounds. British guard Chantel Charles (178-94, college: Maine) contributed with a double-double by scoring 17 points and 12 rebounds for the winners. Four Adelantados players scored in double figures. Adelantados' coach Claudo Garcia felt very confident using 10 players and allowed the starting five to get some rest. Senegalese center Ndeye Fatou (188-93) answered with 11 points and 9 rebounds and American guard Sparkle Taylor (178-95, college: UTEP) added 18 points in the effort for Gran Canaria. The victory was the fourth consecutive win for Adelantados. They maintain second place in Group B with 9-2 record having just two points less than leader RC Celta. Loser Gran Canaria keeps the eighth position with six games lost. Adelantados will face ASEFA Estudiantes (#7) in Madrid in the next round which should be theoretically another easy game. Gran Canaria will play at home against Leganes and hope to win that game.
