Everything went according to plan when fourth ranked Rioja (8-3) outplayed 13th ranked Arxil Pontevedra (1-10) in Azkoitia 93-67 on Saturday. Rioja outrebounded Arxil Pontevedra 40-28 including 28 on the defensive glass. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 21 assists. American guard Briahanna Jackson (168-93, college: Louisville) orchestrated the victory by scoring 24 points, 8 rebounds and 5 assists. Canadian swingman Jessica Fequiere (180-93, college: Albany) contributed with a double-double by scoring 19 points and 11 rebounds for the winners. Four Rioja players scored in double figures. Rioja's coach Luis Aguirre felt very confident using 10 players and allowed the starting five to get some rest. Arantxa Mallou (181-91) answered with 19 points and forward Gala Mestres (185-94, college: Mount Royal) added 15 points and 7 rebounds in the effort for Arxil Pontevedra. The victory was the fifth consecutive win for Rioja. They maintain fourth place in Group A with 8-3 record. Arxil Pontevedra lost their third game in a row. They keep the thirteenth position with ten games lost. Rioja will face GDKO Bizkaia (#7) in Galdakao in the next round. Arxil Pontevedra will play at home against Segle XXI (#11) and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
