Regular Season Round 22: Santos - Libertadores 100-87

There was a small surprise in San Luis Potosi where sixth ranked Santos (9-12) defeated 6th ranked Libertadores (7-13) 100-87 on Thursday. Santos made 31-of-35 free shots (88.6 percent) during the game, while Libertadores only scored twelve points from the stripe. They outrebounded Libertadores 38-25 including 30 on the defensive glass. Libertadores were plagued by 28 personal fouls down the stretch. The game was dominated by American players. Forward Lyonell Gaines (198-93, college: Morehead St.) fired a double-double by scoring 32 points and 18 rebounds for the winners. Point guard Jaron Martin (178-94, college: Cal-Irvine, agency: Duran International) chipped in 27 points and 6 rebounds (made all of his eleven free throws !!!). Worth to mention Gaines played also at Eurobasket Summer League, which helped get the job in pro basketball. Power forward Gerard DeVaughn (206-88, college: Stillman) produced 24 points and 4 assists and swingman Brent Jackson (193-94, college: Columbus St.) added 15 points and 6 assists respectively for lost side. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. Santos maintains sixth position with 9-12 record which they share with defeated Libertadores. Loser Libertadores keep the sixth place with 13 games lost. Santos will face again Libertadores (#6) in Queretaro in the next round.
