Regular Season Round 15: Leiden - Groningen 83-77

An interesting game for Leiden (13-1) which hosted in Leiden 3rd placed Groningen (11-4). Second ranked Leiden managed to get a 6-point victory 83-77. It ended at the same time the two-game winning streak of Groningen. The hosts took control from the first minutes by winning the initial quarter 24-20. But Groningen won second period 26-23. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. The game was decided in the last minutes when Leiden won last quarter 18-14. They made 18-of-20 free shots (90.0 percent) during the game. Leiden outrebounded Groningen 42-30 including 29 on the defensive glass. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 22 assists. It was a good game for American guard Darius Thompson (193-95, college: W.Kentucky) who led his team to a victory with 24 points, 7 rebounds and 6 assists. His fellow American import point guard Maurice Watson (178-93, college: Creighton) contributed with a double-double by scoring 14 points, 6 rebounds and 11 assists for the winners. American guard Teddy Gipson (191-80, college: Arkansas) answered with 22 points (on 8-of-10 shooting from the field) and Croatian power forward Drago Pasalic (208-84, agency: Court Side) added 13 points and 10 rebounds in the effort for Groningen. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. Leiden have an impressive series of eleven victories in a row. They maintain second place with 13-1 record having just three points less than leader Zwolle. Defending champion Groningen keeps the third position with four games lost. Leiden are looking forward to face league's leader Zwolle on the road in the next round and it will be for sure the game of the week. Groningen will play against Amsterdam and is hoping to prove to their supporters that the loss was just an accident.
