Eighth-ranked Cairns Taipans (4-19) made lots of trouble for sixth ranked Illawarra Hawks (11-12) in Gwynneville on Saturday. Illawarra Hawks managed to secure only one-point victory 82-81. However their fans expected easier game. Cairns Taipans were tied after three quarters but could not keep up in the last quarter eventually losing the game. Great defensive blocking was one of the keys in this match when Illawarra Hawks made 9 blocks. It was a great evening for American forward Brian Conklin (201-89, college: St.Louis) who led his team to a victory scoring 15 points and 7 rebounds. The former international center AJ Ogilvy (211-88, college: Vanderbilt) helped adding 9 points and 10 rebounds. The best for the losing side was American guard Melo Trimble (190-95, college: Maryland) with 24 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists (went 7 for 7 at the free throw line) and the other American import guard DJ Newbill (193-92, college: Penn St.) scored 17 points and 5 assists. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. Both coaches allowed to play bench players in such tough game. Illawarra Hawks maintains sixth place with 11-12 record. Loser Cairns Taipans stay at the bottom position with 19 games lost. Illawarra Hawks will again meet at home bottom-ranked Cairns Taipans (#8) in the next round. Cairns Taipans will play against Adelaide 36ers and hope to secure a win.
