There was a small surprise when eleventh ranked Empoli (3-12) defeated on the road 9th ranked Battipaglia (3-12) 71-63 on Sunday. Lithuanian forward Gabriele Narviciute (190-90) stepped up and scored 15 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists for the winners and naturalized Brazilian swingman Tayara Madonna (170-91, agency: SPORTlab Agency) chipped in 12 points and 10 rebounds. Four Empoli players scored in double figures. American forward Kristen Simon (188-95, college: USC) responded with a double-double by scoring 18 points, 14 rebounds and 4 assists and British Chantelle Handy (188-87, college: Marshall, agency: Two Points) scored 20 points and 6 rebounds. Battipaglia's coach Alberto Matassini rotated ten players in this game, but that didn't help. Empoli moved-up to ninth place, which they share with defeated Battipaglia. Battipaglia lost fourth consecutive game. Empoli will meet at home higher ranked Ragusa (#3) in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Battipaglia will play against the league's leader Venezia (#1) and will have a slim chance for a victory.
