Regular Season Round 18: United - Taipans 85-87

The game had a very big importance for eighth-ranked Cairns Taipans as it allowed them to take a leadership position after previous leader's (Perth Wildcats) loss. Cairns Taipans edged higher ranked United in Melbourne 87-85. Cairns Taipans players were unselfish on offense dishing 22 assists. It was a good game for American guard Melo Trimble (190-95, college: Maryland) who led his team to a victory with 21 points, 5 rebounds and 9 assists. The other American import guard DJ Newbill (193-92, college: Penn St.) contributed with 17 points for the winners. The former international guard Chris Goulding (192-88) replied with 22 points and 4 assists and international guard Mitchell McCarron (191-92, college: MSU Denver) added 13 points, 7 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 steals in the effort for United. Four United players scored in double figures. Both coaches tested many bench players in such tough game. As mentioned above they took over a top position. Defending champion United still keeps top place with ten games lost. They share the position with Kings and Wildcats.
