Regular Season Round 28: Leiden - Groningen 82-85

The most crucial game of the last round was a loss of top-ranked Leiden (27-3) at the home court on Tuesday night. Hosts were edged by fourth ranked Groningen (19-10) 85-82. It ended at the same time the six-game winning streak of Leiden. Leiden trailed by 12 points at halftime and as many as 13 after three quarters before a 27-17 last quarter charge cut the deficit to 82-85 at the end of the game. Groningen looked well-organized offensively handing out 30 assists. Worth to mention a great performance of the former international center Thomas Koenis (211-89, agency: Court Side) who helped to win the game recording a double-double by scoring 19 points, 12 rebounds and 8 assists. International Rienk Mast (203-1) contributed with 18 points and 8 rebounds for the winners. Groningen's coach Erik Braal used a ten-player rotation in such tough game. International Worthy de-Jong (194-88) replied with 28 points and 6 rebounds and American point guard Maurice Watson (178-93, college: Creighton) added 22 points, 9 assists and 4 steals in the effort for Leiden. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. Defending champion maintains fourth position with 19-10 record. Leiden at the other side still keeps top place with three games lost. Groningen are looking forward to face Den Helder (#6) at home in the next round. Leiden will play against Den Bosch (#3) and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
