Regular Season Round 29: Groningen - Leiden 76-81

An exciting game between Top Four teams was played in Groningen. First ranked Leiden faced 4th placed Groningen. Guests from Leiden (30-3) defeated host Groningen (21-11) 81-76. It ended at the same time the two-game winning streak of Groningen. The guests trailed by 2 points at the halftime before their 30-17 charge in the third quarter, which allowed them to win the game. Strangely Groningen outrebounded Leiden 39-27 including 27 on the defensive glass. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 21 assists. American guard Darius Thompson (193-95, college: WKU) stepped up and scored 19 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists for the winners and his fellow American import point guard Maurice Watson (178-93, college: Creighton) chipped in 16 points, 5 rebounds, 8 assists and 4 steals. International Rienk Mast (203-1) responded with 19 points and 6 rebounds and American guard Teddy Gipson (191-80, college: Arkansas) scored 4 points, 9 rebounds and 5 assists. Five Leiden and four Groningen players scored in double figures. Groningen's coach Erik Braal rotated ten players in this game, but that didn't help. The victory was the third consecutive win for Leiden. They maintain first place with 30-3 record. Defending champion Groningen keeps the fourth position with 11 games lost. Leiden will have a break next round, and it should allow them to practice more before next game. Groningen will play against Amsterdam (#7) and hope to secure a win.
