There was a small surprise when fifteenth ranked Gran Canaria (11-19) won against 13th ranked Movil Estudiantes (10-18) in Madrid 96-86 on Saturday. The guests trailed by 2 points at the halftime before their 53-41 charge in the second half, which allowed them to win the game. Gran Canaria shot the lights out from three sinking 19 long-distance shots on high 57.6 percentage. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 25 assists. Swedish swingman Marcus Eriksson (201-93) orchestrated the victory by scoring 25 points and 4 assists. American forward Jacob Wiley (203-94, college: EWU) contributed with 18 points and 7 rebounds for the winners. Four Gran Canaria players scored in double figures. Guard Gian Clavell (193-93, college: Colorado St.) answered with 22 points and American-Montenegrin point guard Omar-Sharif Cook (186-82, college: St.John's) added 19 points and 9 assists in the effort for Movil Estudiantes. Both coaches allowed to play bench players saving starting five for next games. Gran Canaria moved-up to thirteenth place. Loser Movil Estudiantes dropped to the fourteenth position with 18 games lost. Gran Canaria will face league's leader FC Barcelona at home in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Movil Estudiantes will play against Unicaja Malaga (#5) and hope to win that game.
