There was no surprise when 16th ranked Quilmes MP (11-22) was outplayed on the road by twelfth ranked Olimpico de La Banda (17-19) 88-57 on Thursday. Olimpico de La Banda made 22-of-23 free shots (95.7 percent) during the game. They also forced 19 Quilmes MP turnovers and outrebounded them 45-29 including a 32-20 advantage in defensive rebounds. Cuban Karel Guzman (188-95) stepped up and scored 16 points for the winners and Dominican forward Luis Santos (203-94, college: St.Louis) chipped in 13 points and 8 rebounds. Four Olimpico de La Banda players scored in double figures. The best for the losing side was American guard Winsome Frazier (193-82, college: Mississippi St., agency: Interperformances) with 20 points and 5 rebounds and the other American import forward Rick Jackson (206-89, college: Syracuse) scored 12 points and 7 rebounds. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. Olimpico de La Banda maintains twelfth place with 17-19 record. Loser Quilmes MP dropped to the seventeenth position with 22 games lost. Olimpico de La Banda will face higher ranked Boca Juniors (#9) in Buenos Aires in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Quilmes MP will play on the road against Instituto (#5) in Cordoba and hope to win that game.
