There was a small surprise when sixth ranked Bendigo Braves (5-3) defeated at home 4th placed Geelong Supercats (5-4) 96-80 on Sunday. They outrebounded Geelong Supercats 50-35 including a 30-19 advantage in defensive rebounds. Bendigo Braves looked well-organized offensively handing out 25 assists. Great defensive blocking was one of the keys in this match when Bendigo Braves made 8 blocks. American forward Ray Turner (206-90, college: Texas A&M) orchestrated the victory with a double-double by scoring 19 points, 17 rebounds and 4 blocks. His fellow American import point guard Deonte Burton (183-91, college: Nevada) contributed with 18 points, 7 rebounds and 6 assists for the winners. Burton is a former Eurobasket Summer League player, which is considered top summer league for players who want to play basketball overseas. Bendigo Braves' coach Don Hogan used entire bench which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Naturalized British forward Lewis Thomas (203-92, college: W.Oregon) answered with 19 points and 6 rebounds and American guard Demarcus Gatlin (193, college: SHSU) added 13 points, 7 rebounds, 5 assists and 5 steals in the effort for Geelong Supercats. Four Bendigo Braves and five Geelong Supercats players scored in double figures. Bendigo Braves moved-up to third place in League. Loser Geelong Supercats dropped to the seventh position with four games lost. Bendigo Braves will face Waverley Falcons (#5) in Mount Waverley in the next round. Geelong Supercats will play at home against Diamond Valley Eagles and hope to win that game.
