Regular Season Round 15: Culiacan - Venados 98-92

There was a minor upset when 6th ranked Venados (14-18) were defeated on the road by eighth ranked Caballeros de Culiacan (14-16) 98-92 on Saturday. Caballeros de Culiacan made 16-of-21 free shots (76.2 percent) during the game. Caballeros de Culiacan outrebounded Venados 40-27 including a 30-18 advantage in defensive rebounds. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 22 assists. Great defensive blocking was one of the keys in this match when Caballeros de Culiacan made 7 blocks. It was a great evening for American point guard Jeffery Stubbs (189-91, college: Jackson St.) who led his team to a victory with a triple-double by scoring 24 points, 11 rebounds and 11 assists (went 10 for 10 at the free throw line !!!). His fellow American import forward Sammy Yeager (193-89, college: CS Fullerton) helped adding 30 points, 8 rebounds and 5 assists. The best for the losing side was Jamaican-American Akeem Scott (185-83, college: High Point) with 27 points, 6 assists and 5 steals and American forward Carl Hall (202-89, college: Wichita St.) scored 15 points, 8 rebounds and 4 blocks. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Caballeros de Culiacan moved-up to seventh place. Loser Venados dropped to the eighth position with 18 games lost. Caballeros de Culiacan will face higher ranked Gigantes (#6) in Guadalajara in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory.
