There was a small surprise when thirteenth ranked Brisbane Spartans (3-7) beat at home 10th ranked South West Metro Pirates (4-7) 114-110 on Sunday. South West Metro Pirates were plagued by 24 personal fouls down the stretch. American point guard Chris Whitehead (175-92, college: Bellarmine) orchestrated the victory by scoring 34 points (!!!), 8 assists and 4 steals. Forward Josh Derksen (206-95, college: Ky Wesleyan) contributed with a double-double by scoring 21 points and 10 rebounds for the winners. Brisbane Spartans' coach allowed to play the deep bench players in such tough game. American-DR Congolese forward Henry Pwono (201-91, college: East Central) answered with a double-double by scoring 25 points, 14 rebounds and 5 assists and forward Jarred Bairstow (201-92, college: Cent.Oklahoma) added 30 points and 7 assists (on 11-of-14 shooting from the field) in the effort for South West Metro Pirates. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. Brisbane Spartans moved-up to twelfth place in League. Loser South West Metro Pirates keep the tenth position with seven games lost. Brisbane Spartans will face higher ranked Rip (#9) in Sippy Downs in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory.
