Regular Season Round 3: SE M. Phoenix - Hawks 106-102

Date: October 19, 2019
There was no surprise in Melbourne, Victoria where Illawarra Hawks (1-4) were defeated by Melbourne Phoenix (3-0) 106-102 on Saturday. However just four-point win is not that big difference and the fans of host team counted on more convincing victory. Melbourne Phoenix made 21-of-26 free shots (80.8 percent) during the game. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 24 assists. The best player for the winners was American guard John Roberson (180-88, college: Texas Tech) who had a double-double by scoring 26 points and 10 assists (went 9 for 9 at the free throw line !!!). International swingman Mitch Creek (196-92) chipped in 23 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists. At the other side the best for losing team was American point guard Aaron Brooks (183-85, college: Oregon) who recorded 23 points and 5 assists and international swingman Tim Coeenraad (201-85, college: Nova SE) added 16 points and 5 rebounds respectively. Five Melbourne Phoenix and four Illawarra Hawks players scored in double figures. Both coaches allowed to play bench players in such tough game. Melbourne Phoenix will face Perth Wildcats (#3) on the road in the next round, which may be the game of the day. Illawarra Hawks will play against New Zealand Breakers (#8) in Auckland and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
