Regular Season Round 5: Amsterdam - Leeuwarden 80-68

Amsterdam's fans can celebrate the first win of their team after six consecutive losses. They used home court advantage to defeat Leeuwarden (0-6) 80-68. The game was mostly controlled by Amsterdam. Leeuwarden was better in second period 19-18. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Amsterdam forced 22 Leeuwarden turnovers. Their players were unselfish on offense dishing 21 assists. Leeuwarden was plagued by 24 personal fouls down the stretch. American guard Xavier Cannefax (188-89, college: Warner Pacific) stepped up and scored 24 points, 6 rebounds and 8 assists for the winners and Serbian power forward Mladen Vitkovic (198-90) chipped in 12 points, 9 rebounds and 7 assists. Cannefax is a former Eurobasket Summer League player, which is considered top international summer league in the market. Amsterdam's coach Patrick Faydherbe allowed to play the deep bench players saving starting five for next games. British Samuel Idowu (201-97, college: St.Peter's) responded with 18 points and 8 rebounds (on 8-of-9 shooting from the field) and swingman Tim Hoeve (196-98) scored 12 points and 6 assists. Four Leeuwarden players scored in double figures. Amsterdam (1-6) left bottom position moving up to eighth place. It was Leeuwarden's sixth loss in a row. They still close the standings with six games lost. Amsterdam will play against higher ranked Zwolle (#3) at home in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Leeuwarden will play against Den Helder (#7) and hopes to get finally their first victory.
