Regular Season Round 5: Fr.Mathews - DCU Mercy 62-76

An exciting game between Top Four teams was played in Cork. Leader DCU Mercy faced 4th placed Fr.Mathews. Guests from Dublin (5-0) defeated host Fr.Mathews (3-2) 76-62. It ended at the same time the two-game winning streak of Fr.Mathews. DCU Mercy made 16-of-16 free shots (100 percent !!!) during the game. American guard Ashley Russell (178, college: Pennsylvania) stepped up and scored 23 points, 9 rebounds, 5 assists and 4 steals (was perfect 7-for-7 from the free throw line) for the winners and the former international guard Sarah Woods (174-88) chipped in 20 points. DCU Mercy's coach used an eleven-player rotation which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. The former international forward Grainne Dwyer (182-84) responded with a double-double by scoring 20 points, 10 rebounds and 6 assists and American forward Shannon Brady (183, college: Bowdoin) scored 18 points and 5 rebounds. DCU Mercy have an impressive series of five victories in a row. They maintain first place with 5-0 record. Defending champion Fr.Mathews dropped to the third position with two games lost. They share it with 3 other teams. DCU Mercy will meet at home Brunell (#8) in the next round and are hoping to win another game. Fr.Mathews will play against Liffey Celtics (#3) in Kildare and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
